Get to know our teachers…

 Infant Room Teachers

Hello, my name is Joan Willson.  I am 67 years old and I have worked for CLC in the infant room since the beginning, in 2008.  I am a retired teacher with the Oxford School District and my husband, David Willson, is the director of bands at Ole Miss.  I recently had both knee replaced, and was proud to be able to walk the St Jude 5K last year.

I love working with babies; they always amaze me when they first learn to crawl, pull up and then start walking. The babies learn so many things in their first year.  It is truly amazing.  There is never a dull moment in the infant room for sure. Our babies are very smart; I know this because I can just see the “wheels turning” in their little minds when learning how to do something new. It is so fun to watch them grow and learn during that first year.

I enjoy my job because I love being around children. When I retired from teaching I stayed home for a year.  I enjoyed that year off, but I really missed being around children.  I LOVE the CLC.  I love working here and would like to think I am making a small difference.

The most challenging part of my job is not being able to figure out why a baby is crying.  But what is especially hard about my job is when the parents and children become an important part of my everyday routine and life, then all of sudden they “age out” and go to “big school.”

My advice to a new teacher would be to seek out mentor and to know it is ok to ask for advice and help.

My favorite bible verse and what I strive to live by is 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not show envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking.  It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.” The golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”  is a favorite quote of mine.

A few things on my bucket list are

  • Travel to Japan
  • Run another half-marathon
  • Visit my pen pal in Australia again.  We have corresponded since 4th grade.
