Ten years of Blessings

Get to know our teachers…

 Three Year Olds

Hello, my name is Paula Rikard.   I am 29 years old and I have worked at CLC since July 2008. I have been here since it opened.  I am presently a lead teacher in our young three year old class.  Before becoming a lead teacher, I worked as an assistant teacher in the three and four year old classes. I have learned a lot about teaching over the years. I like to find new and fun ways to teach children. I enjoy crafting and everything Pinterest. My class is always colorfully decorated with arts and crafts we do together.  We have a good time doing crafty things in class.   When I am not at school, I love to watch food network and learn new recipes to cook for my family.

I have worked at CLC for almost 10 years.  It has been an amazing experience.  The best thing about my job is my coworkers.  We all love and encourage each other. We celebrate birthdays, weddings, and babies together. They are like family to me. I am lucky to work with such good friends.

As a teacher my favorite units to teach is Christmas and Easter. There is so much to sing, make and do during these holidays.  At Christmas we make lots of Christmas crafts to keep and to share.  We also sing a lot.  We practice Christmas carols for our Christmas performance for our parents.  Our favorite Christmas carols to sing is “Go tell it on the Mountain.”  During story time, I love to share the birth of Jesus story to my class.  They love it too.  They are beginning to understand the real meaning of Christmas and that it is not just about Santa Claus and gifts.  At Easter time with spring is in the air, we talk about flowers, sunshine, rain and bugs.  But reading the Easter story and going out to Easter egg hunt is a class favorite every year.

Being a teacher for so many years you know kids will say the funniest things.  For me one of the funniest things I have heard a kid say was about a Big Bus.  This little boy, Logan, had a wild imagination once told me he lived on a big bus with shag carpet.  He said he wore a big hat and a big coat on the bus.  On special days, he would invite his friends and animal friends on his bus and they would go on trips. Where he got that I will never know, but it sounds like a good idea for an adventure book.

Teaching can be challenging.   It is important to be consistent with your rules and expectations every day and give them lots of praise.  I praise my class by saying, “Great job!”, and  “I am so proud of you!”  Kids love to be praised.  They will try harder when you praise them.  As a teacher, my advice to a new teacher is be prepared to answer a lot of why questions.  Kids are so inquisitive and they want to “why” about everything.  I like that about kids.

My favorite Bible verse is, Philippians 4:13 “I can do all this through Him who give me strength.”  This verse reminds me to lean and trust in God and I can get through anything.

A few things on my bucket list are
