Get to know our teachers…

 Three Year Olds

Hello, my name is Debra West.   I am 38 years old and I have worked at CLC since July 2009.   I am presently an assistant teacher in our young three year old class.  I have three children.  My oldest is Cody.  He graduated from Faulkner High School in 2018. My younger two children are Henry and Ava Claire.  Henry is in 1st grade and Ava Claire is 4 years old.  Anyone who knows me well also knows my children keep me VERY busy and entertained- especially my younger two.  I can tend to be a little shy, but my children are not shy at all!  They never meet a stranger and usually have everyone around them laughing within minutes of meeting them.  My children amaze me with their knowledge and curious questions. I am a blessed mom.   When I am not at work or tending to my own children, I love music and dancing. 

I have worked at CLC for almost 10 years.  My younger kids and I have been blessed to have CLC in our lives. They have come to work with me every day since they were babies.   One of the best things about my job is my coworkers.  Many of my coworkers and I have worked together for many years and they are like family to me.  The CLC kids are the best too.   When you are in a difficult situation in your life, the hugs and smiles you get from the little ones in your class makes a bad day a little better.  It is hard to be in a bad mood when 12 little people are so excited to see you. 

As a teacher my favorite units to teach is Christmas and Easter.  There is so much to celebrate, sing, and create during these lessons.  I am amazed how much the kids really seem to understand these Bible stories. God is good.             

Being a preschool teacher for so many years I know kids can say the funniest things.  For me,  the funniest thing I have heard a kid say came from one of my  sweet, quiet, and mostly shy little girls.  She came up to me and asked, “Mrs. Debra, what does poop say? I looked at her in shock. (I know, I know… after this many years in childcare I shouldn’t be alarmed at such a question, but this time I was.) So with a chuckle I asked, “What did you say?” and without hesitation she asked again, “What does poop say?” Yep, I thought to myself, I did hear her right and now I am curious but a little nervous about what in the world her response is going to be. Just then, she runs off chanting and cheering “We’re #2, We’re #2… I have to admit, I was a little relieved by this response.  What a funny little girl! I got a big laugh from it and to this day I still chuckle when I think about this conversation.  I wonder which one of her siblings put her up to repeating that joke.  Ha Ha Ha!  Kids are the best!

Teaching three year olds can sometimes be challenging.  We work with them on writing their names and learning their letters.  Children this age can get easily frustrated, especially with handwriting, but we just keep doing it and WOW, when they get it they are proud as can be.   I give them lots of praise.  I love to tell my kids “Good Job! See, I knew you could do it.”

 My favorite Bible verse is, Philippians 4:13 “I can do all this through Him who give me strength.”  This verse reminds me when I feel like I cannot go on I know Christ is always there to guide me. My favorite quote is “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.  This reminds me to be loving and to treat people and children with respect.        

       

A few things on my bucket list are

  • Pet a Dolphin

  • Gain more confidence in myself
