Get to know our teachers…

 Three Year Olds

Hello, my name is Carmen Petty.   I am 39 years old and I have worked at CLC since July 2014.   I am the lead teacher for our older 3 year old class.  I have three children.  I have 3 children. My oldest is LaJasia. She is a freshman in college.   My middle child is Demitri.  He is in the 6th grade and Brandon is my youngest child.  He has attended at CLC but now he is in 1st at Oxford Elementary.   When I am not working or tending to my children, I like to travel.  I hope to travel a lot more in my future.

I love serving others.  Before coming to work at CLC I worked at Millcreek with special needs adults.  I loved my clients there, and just like my three year olds now all they really need from me is a lot of love, patience and guidance.  They are so capable of doing good things, just like my students here at CLC.   I love to see my class blossom into smart and independent little people.  I know I am bias, but my CLC kids are the best and they are very smart. I like to watch their willingness to take on new task head-on without fear.  They are open-minded and like to think outside the box- something that we adults tend to forget to do.

As a teacher my favorite unit to teach is “We Thank God.”  In this lesson I teach the importance of being thankful for what you have and how God made it possible.  The most challenging lesson to teach my kids is to treat others how you want to be treated. On a typical day in my class, when I ask my friends what they want to play with; they always want to play with the magnets. I think magnets are pretty fascinating too.  When my class is making good choices I praise them by saying good Job and thank you.  But when I have to correct them, I ask, “Are we making good choices?” That always seems to help.  They know what is right. They just need a gentle reminder.   All in all, we work every day to be better and I am proud of how much my kids want to learn, grow and make good choices.

Kids are also very funny.  I could write a book!  I remember when one of my friends told the class that boys do things better than girls. He even added his Mom messes things up all the time!  Ha Ha!  I thought to myself, “Boy, he has a lot to learn!” One of these days he is going to think girls are pretty sweet.

The hardest part of being a preschool teacher is letting go.  When my children move up to the next class I am so proud of how much they have grown and learned to be ready for the next step, but it is most definitely a bitter sweet day.

My advice to a new teacher is to be flexible, no one is perfect.  You will make mistakes along the way but make sure to learn from them, and remember tomorrow is a new day.  New beginning.  New blessing.

My favorite Bible verse is, Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”  This verse reminds me to treat others how I want to be treated.   My favorite inspirational quote is “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.  I like this because it reminds me I cannot let life’s situations and circumstances get me down.  These things happen for a reason.  Hard times can make or break me, but if you let them, they will definitely make you stronger and wiser.

A few things on my bucket list are

  • Take my family to Disney
  • Go to the Caribbean Islands
  • Visit another Country
